    Background

    Dr Cockings' qualified from St Bartholomews Hospital, London, in 1986. He underwent training in anaesthesia at St Bartholomews and St Thomas' Hospitals before moving to Adelaide, Australia for training in intensive care medicine. He took up a post as an intensive care physician in Brisbane, Australia, in 1995 and practiced there in both intensive care medicine and anaesthesia until returning to the UK in 2003 where he took up his current post in Reading. His major research interests include monitoring and improving quality in healthcare. His main anaesthesia focus has been in upper gastrointestinal surgery and head and neck surgery. He lives with his wife and three young children near Henley-on-Thames.
